For about six years I have been dedicated to exercising, spending at least two hours in the gym each week. This has caused a huge change to my energy, my attitude and my self-esteem. It seems to me that starting by improving your fitness allows you to feel much better about yourself. The amazing part is that this leads to more energy, so you begin to improve in other areas of your life too. Caring about yourself leads you to improve yourself so that you care even more. Out of this care, you will also be able to give more to others.
So, I figured out the exercise part awhile ago and noticed how it motivated me in other areas of my life, as mentioned. Recently I realized that if I want to live my best life, I need to also focus on eating good food every day, along with exercising. I started eating more salad and fruit and less bread and meat. After doing this for a couple of weeks, I already feel more energetic and have grown to love apples, oranges and avocados, where I didn’t eat these much in the past.
If you think about it, there are people in the world who have very little food who really know the meaning of hunger. Do we just eat out of habit when we aren’t even hungry? Do we eat at times simply because we are bored and looking for something to do to pass the time? Do we eat to live or live to eat? That is, do we eat for energy or for pleasure?
I think the key is that if you value your health and fitness, then your actions need to align with this value every day. Keep your mind fixed on doing things that are truly good for you and others. Keep focused on living your greatest life and eliminate any bad things in your life. As mentioned, to remove a bad habit you must replace it with a good one. Push yourself to stick with the new thing until it becomes a habit, after about a month. Your mind can do anything if you care enough about yourself to make the needed changes.
Another value I have is being a good example for my family and my students. Mahatma Gandhi said, “As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change toward him.” So, I am motivated to eat properly and exercise, not just for my own benefit but so that by example, other people can have great lives as well. As a teacher, I realize I cannot change my students directly. My burning desire is, that as I improve myself, my students will see my energy, passion, effort, positive attitude, love of learning, and will to succeed, and this will make a difference in their lives.
All you must do is make the choice to live your best day, today.
